Now that we have passed that mysterious week between Christmas and New Year where each day morphs into the next, eating all the Christmas leftovers and relaxing with family and friends, it’s time to look forward to 2023.
So what were your New Years Resolutions? (Like so many people, mine are to loose weight, improve my finances, build relationships with my customers and grow my business, spend more time with my family and friends and have an organised home.)
No matter what your New Years Resolutions are, your home has a big influence on your life changes. Taking a few steps to re-arrange and organise your home will set you up for success in the New Year.
Having a clean and organised Kitchen is an important step to improve your health
The kitchen is where the family gathers for meals, the kids get their snacks and meals are prepared, so why not make your kitchen a family friendly, healthy zone?
Working shelf by shelf, throw out old and expired items. If you haven’t used something in months are you really going to use it? There are many charities that accept donations of food that are still within use by dates, so don’t feel guilty about not using the food you have bought, donate it to someone who will use it, instead of cluttering up your shelves.
The same applies to your fridge All the opened half empty bottles of sauces and condiments that are not being eaten take up valuable space that could be filled with healthier alternatives.
Clean your kitchen and organise it to the needs of the family. Restock your shelves with healthy foods but be realistic. If you are changing eating habits, try not to overwhelm yourself with too many food changes at once. Changing habits need time and consistency so take it day by day.
Keep healthy everyday snacks for little ones close at hand. If the kids spend a lot of time with you in the kitchen, would a kid’s zone make your life easier?
Having some quick and easy meal ideas close at hand help you on the days you don’t feel motivated to cook.
Having an organised and clean home makes your life run smoother and less stressful every day.
First step is to find a place for all the new Christmas Gifts.
Next, de-clutter your cupboards working room by room.
All those items that you plan to use one day but never do, takes up a lot of mental and physical space in your home. Consider selling them on marketplaces and use the money earned to pay off some debt, buy something new for your home or for a family activity.
Alternatively, donate old linens to animal shelters and unwanted household items and clothes to op shops.
If you are back at work and don’t have time to do a big de-clutter, aim to do a little every day, even if it is one item a day, that’s 365 items by the end of the year. Looking for more de-clutter tips, read our Tips to declutter your home or join our declutter challenge.
Avoid the dreaded laundry pile. Have a system for your washing. Maybe different wash days for different fabrics, separate baskets for each colour, separate baskets for each family member, baskets in the kids rooms. Think of what your biggest problems with laundry are and find a solution to make your life easier.
It is easy to clean you home by having all you cleaning supplies together. A basket with all your cleaning supplies in makes it easier to move from room to room.
Having a home that you feel comfortable spending time in is important, a place to entertain your friends and family, creating beautiful memories.
Create spaces in your home that fit the needs of the family.
A kids play area so that the kids have their own space to play and not trail their toys all over the house.
A place to entertain your family and friends, with seating and comfy cushions to relax. When entertaining, do you prefer indoors or outdoors?
Do you need a place to relax after a busy day at work? Consider the lighting to add a sense of relaxation at the end of a busy day.
Each room should have a purpose and be set up to meet that purpose.
Look at the flow of your home. Is it easy to move from room to room or do you have to move around furniture to get from one space to the next?
Take control of your finances by being organised.
Create a filling system for all your important documents and bills instead of having a pile of papers on your kitchen counter.
To help you achieve your financial goals for 2023, try to use or repurpose what you have in your home before going out to the shops. A piece of furniture sanded and painted or varnished can be repurposed for use in another room.
Make energy saving changes in your home with energy efficient appliances and light bulbs.
A regular maintenance schedule helps prevent big repair bills. Cleaning out filters, checking alarm batteries, cleaning gutters etc help to keep the home in good condition.
Look at all your monthly expenses and consider what you can change. Do you need all the monthly subscription services such as Netflix, Stan, Disney Plus? Are there any phone service plans that are better suited to your family needs? Can you get a better deal on your insurances? A few dollars each week can add up to big savings at the end of the year.
